Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. ​​Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.​

​​The Database Systems organization delivers world class database technologies used across the globe on everything from small devices, desktops and servers to some of the largest Cloud deployments in the world. Our data platform powers innovation in every industry, facilitates breakthrough scientific and medical research, and underpins intelligent applications that are changing the way we live. Enterprise customers are using these platforms to disrupt markets and transform their existing businesses. The SQL Backplane team is looking for people who are interested in developing a state-of the-art platform that spans multiple clouds, hosts open source and Microsoft database engines, and enables touch-free deployments to millions of databases in a fast, safe, and reliable way. The platform provides full lifecycle services involving deployment, upgrade, high availability, disaster recovery, supportability, and management end-to-end.

  • ​Provide project leadership, technical guidance, quality oversight, and direct code contributions

  • Deliver complete features, services, or solutions. This includes design, implementation, testing, deployment, and live-site monitoring

Qualifications

Required /Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.​

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • ​​Experience building and shipping production grade software or services.

  • Experience building and operating online services and fault-tolerant distributed systems.

  • Experience creating and shipping products using modern development practices.

  • Experience using agile methodologies or test-driven development (TDD).

  • Great curiosity and willingness to question.

  • High enthusiasm, integrity, ingenuity, results-orientation, self-motivation, and resourcefulness in a fast-paced environment.

  • Have a deep desire to work collaboratively, solve problems with groups, find win/win solutions and celebrate successes.

  • Get excited by the challenge of hard technical problems.

  • Solve problems by always leading with deep passion and empathy for customers.

  • Understanding of data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems​

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
