DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Media Representative to join the Communications’ Division.

Essential job duties and responsibilities include:

  • Representing the department as spokesperson, relaying information, promoting publicity and fielding questions, for all public/media related activities;

  • Promoting departmental activities through appropriate media channels.

  • Preparing press releases and media advisory bulletins.

  • Coordinating and preparing monthly statistical information for dissemination to the media, public and community;

  • Writing speeches; gathering information and responding to TPIA's for the department;

  • Assisting the Senior Division Manager with special projects, and working directly with all divisions within the department to highlight event;

  • Acting as a liaison between the department and the community;

  • Preparing and distributing responses to all media requests, information interviews, and public inquiries.

  • Performs other duties as requested by division and department head;

  • All duties and responsibilities may not be included in the above job descriptions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position is physically comfortable most of the time with occasional periods of stooping, bending and/or light lifting of materials of up to 10 pounds. There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions. The position may involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations, as with occasional exposure to office chemicals and/or extensive use of a monitor.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Public Administration or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Three years of professional experience in media, public relations or a closely related field are required.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
