Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU . CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

CEMML is at the forefront of solving complex environmental problems for federal land managers for nearly 40 years and have earned a reputation for being responsive to customer needs and for providing quality products on time, in scope, and within budget.

CEMML manages 240+ projects and generates over $100 million dollars in awards annually, accounting for roughly one-fourth of CSU’s entire research budget. Our Fort Collins staff complements over 500 full-time and seasonal employees working at more than 75 DoD facilities around the world.

Position Summary

A Project Administrator position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ). The Project Administrator will support our project management team to help coordinate a group of interdisciplinary specialists that execute cultural and natural resource projects for military installations. This position is located at Colorado State University’s ( CSU ) main campus in Fort Collins, Colorado, but telework arrangements will be considered.

This position will provide administrative support to help coordinate a growing team working on multiple, simultaneous cultural and natural resources projects. These projects are often multi-year and involve complex schedules with numerous deadlines and deliverables. The primary role of this position will be to use project management software(i.e., SmartSheet) to develop and maintain timelines and clearly communicate those timelines with the team. In addition, the Project Administrator will support project managers with reviewing completed projects for potential issues (e.g., formatting inconsistencies ortypos), ensuring products fulfill project requirements, and assist with tracking and reporting project progress. As such, the position will require excellent communication, organization, and creative problem solving skills. This is an excellent position for someone who would like to work closely with project managers and gain experience coordinating complex project timelines. Experience with Smartsheet is preferred, and willingness to take online training courses to gain expertise in this software is required.

The Project Administrator will help to support work related to a diversity of DoD projects, including updating Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans (INRMPs), updating Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plans (ICRMPs), and writing and compiling Air Force climate change assessments. Experience in these topics is preferred, but not required. However, a successful applicant will have an understanding for the importance of this work and will be willing to learn more about the regulatory guidance and processes used to support natural and cultural resources management on military lands.

Work location is dependent on the needs of the partner/project/role. In some instances, positions may require staff to be fully in-person. In other instances, hybrid or remote arrangements may be possible.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g. business, project management); OR a Bachelors Degree related to natural or cultural resources (e.g., ecology, anthropology, environmental sciences) and some professional experience in administration or project coordination.

  • Experience working with project management software such as Smartsheet to develop a projects timeline, assign tasks, and monitor progress; and passion for seeking out creative solutions to technological and logistical challenges.

  • Excellent writing skills and experience editing work for grammar, clarity, and consistent format.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

  • Experience working independently and in a team setting.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Project Administration or Project Management certification.

  • Experience running effort allocation reports and creating project dashboards.

  • Experience with relevant project topics such as natural and cultural resources management, climate change adaptation, or threatened and endangered species management.

  • Experience preparing and reviewing compliance documents (e.g., Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, etc.).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of cultural resources and professional standards (e.g. archaeological (historic, prehistoric); historic built environment; cultural landscapes; properties of traditional, religious, and cultural significance; curation standards; tribal relations).

  • Experience reviewing and refining project goals, establishing project objectives and timelines, and tracking project progress.

  • Experience setting up new projects and customizing Resource Management in SmartSheet is highly desired.
